From Onibaba to The Exorcist, Black Sunday’s influence is as strong as its stomach-turning effects work, a must-see for any fanatic of Giallo or other horror sub-genres. With gothic set design that’d make Universal classics quake in their boots, and a frightening performance from lead actress Barbara Steele, the film does well in its visual appeal, Bava’s compositions bringing the more dormant aspects to life.

Black Sunday is a classic: I can't beleive that it got such rough treatment. From what I remember reading it is one of Bava's earlier movies and the very first appearance of Barbera Steel, whom I think of as one of the loveliest genre actresses of her day. the film is mostly praised for her presence in it, once she returns from the dead the movie really takes off.
